Halloween Howl - Halloween Fun For The Whole Family

Spider Frenzy Halloween Party

Spiders, spiders everywhere! They're creepy crawly and oh so Halloweenish. Why not mix it up this year and instead of the typical ghost or haunted house party, let's put together a Spider Frenzy Halloween party instead.

Spider Frenzy Invitation

Making your own invitations should be a breeze with a few spider graphics and a greeting card software program. You can also do it by hand. Just use black card stock folded in half. Using a florescent green or silver marker, draw an outline of a spider web onto the front of the card (you will probably want to lightly draw a template with a pencil first, then trace with the marker). Add a spider sticker or two and the words "You're Invited To Join In A Spider Frenzy This Halloween!" Include the details of the party on the inside of the card. (Host name, address of where the party is being held, the date of the party, the time, and a phone number where they can reach you.)

Party Costume Ideas

You may wish to give your guests some ideas on how to dress for a "spider frenzy". After all, a ghost at a spider party may look kind of odd. Some spider-related costume ideas are:

A spider, especially a black widow spider
A spider web
A tree with cobwebs
A fly (spiders need their food!)
Spiderman (popular choice)

Spider Frenzy Halloween Party Decorations

Decorating for a spider party is fairly simple. You will need lots and lots of cobwebs, of course. The trick to using cob webs is to spread the webbing out very thinly and carefully, so that it looks light and gauzy, not thick and lumpy. Buy an assortment of different sizes of plastic spiders and place them here and there on the webs. Hang a few dropping down from the ceiling as well.

Drape the cobwebs over lampshades (be careful not to get them near the lightbulbs), across doorways and along windows. Add some to table decorations as well, but don't overdo. Use a light touch to make it more authentic.

** Spider Web Luminaries **

1 tin can
1 awl punch or nail
1 hammer
1 pattern of a spider web
1 tea light or votive candle in a glass container

Draw out a spider web pattern on two sides of the tin can using a fine marker or pencil. Fill the tin can with water and freeze until solid. Once frozen, use a nail or an awl punch and hammer to create small holes along the "web" design. Thaw the can and dump out the water. Dry the inside. Add the candle and you're done. Make several of these and use them to light the walkway up to your house.

** Spider Tree Centerpiece **

1 small tree branch (use a dead branch)
1 medium size terra cotta planting pot
Black paint and a wide brush
White or silver paint and a thin brush
Floral foam
1 package of spider webbing
Package of small plastic spiders
Black thread or clear fishing line

Paint the pot using the black paint and a wide brush. Let dry. Draw a spider web design on the pot with a pencil and outline using the thin brush and white or silver paint. Let dry.

Cut the floral foam to fit in the pot. Stick the tree branch into the floral foam. Carefully drape the webbing along some of the branches. Add the spiders to the webbing. Let some dangle by attaching the thread to the spider and tying to some branches. Finish it off by covering the top of the floral foam with a load of spiders (you may want to hot-glue these down into place.)

** Spider Candles **

2 black or orange taper candles
2 black plastic spiders
2 sewing straight pins
1 jar black acrylic crafters paint
1 thin, narrow painting brush
2 candle holders

Near the bottom third of the candle, carefully paint a spider web pattern using the black paint and brush. Let dry. Using a straight pin, push one through each spider's body and into the candles along the web pattern. Place the candles in candle holders and add some webbing to the holders for extra effect. If you light the candles, keep an eye on them so you can blow them out before they burn down to the paint and spiders.

Spider Frenzy Halloween Party Games

At a children's party, you'll definitely want to play some games. You can also incorporate a few of these ideas as ice breakers and fun activities for an adult party too. After all, we adults are "kids at heart".

** Pin The Spider On The Web **

Make a large web pattern on poster board. Hang up on the wall. Using a bought or handmade spider (about 3 to 4 inches in diameter), add some doublesided tape to the belly of the spider. Play the game like you would "Pin the Tail on the Donkey."

** Spider Trivia **

This is geared more for teen and adult parties. Create a trivia game and see how many know the answers. Give each party attendant a sheet of paper and pen to write down their answers. After you're finished asking the questions, get the guests to exchange their answers with another guest. As you read off the correct answers, each quest will check off right or wrong on the paper that they're marking. Hand back the papers and see which person had the most answers correct. Hand out a prize.

Bend the legs down to the floor, then bend a small section up to form a post to toss rings onto. Insert and glue painted styrofoam balls over the ends of the legs (to prevent any accidental pokes when retrieving the rings). Place the spider on the floor, mark off an area a few feet back as the "standing line". Give guests 3 rings to toss to try to "ring" the spider legs.
