Popular Halloween Costumes That Never Go Out of "Style"

As October 31st draws closer, many of us begin to think about how we want to dress up for this fun holiday. After all, dressing up is an important part of Halloween and it seems there are some popular Halloween costumes that never go out of style.

The great thing is, these particular costumes are also quick to throw together when time is limited or if you don't want to spend a lot of money. Many items can be gathered together right from your closet. If you want to stay true to the spirit of Halloween, think of dressing up as one of these prevalent Halloween characters.

Druid: A druid was essentially a priest in the ancient Celtic culture that was very much attuned to nature. To make your own druid costume, use a large brown robe with a hood, add a rope belt or long linen belt, and some sandals. If desired, you could carry a large branch as a staff.

Scarecrow: To make your own scarecrow costume, find an old pair of jeans or beige/brown cotton pants and apply some colored patches to the knees and elsewhere. Tear around the leg bottoms to give them a ragged look. Put on an old checkered shirt and top if off with an old tweed jacket (patches to the elbows are good here too). Tack some tufts of straw or raffia along the inside of the shirt cuffs and leg bottoms and then tie some short lengths of rope around the cuffs and leg bottoms to cinch in the material. Add a rope belt and a straw hat (you can add more straw/raffia to the hat brim). Paint your face a yellowish white, with a black nose, and black around the eyes. Using a black eyebrow pencil, draw a line across your lips then add short vertical lines across this to represent a "sewn" mouth.

Vampire: This is obviously one of the most popular Halloween costumes chosen each year, probably because it's a very easy costume for men to put together: black pants, black shirt, and a black cape with a red lining. Paint your face white, your lips red, and put in some fake fangs. If you want your vampire costume to look a bit more elaborate, add a black top hat and a fancy cane.

Skeleton: Halloween just wouldn't be Halloween without some skeletons walking around. In order to make this costume, you will need a full-body black leotard or a black sweat suit. You can make the bones using white electrical tape or cut them out of white iron-on interfacing (available in sewing departments) and apply it to your clothing - however, if you use the interfacing, please be aware that it won't come off the clothing once it's been ironed on. Put on a black stretch hood or cap to cover your hair and paint your face white. Circle your eyes with black face paint, add a bit of black to define a "nose cavity" and outline your mouth like a skull. Add some black stretch gloves and shoes to finish the outfit.

Ghost: If you don't see a ghost floating about, then it isn't Halloween night! To make a ghost costume quickly, go with the old stand-by… a white sheet with holes cut in it for your eyes.

Monster: There are many types of monsters, from our friendly old Frankenstein to the Hunchback of Notre Dame. To easily put together your own monster costume, put on an old suit, stuff it here and there with old newspapers to create a misshapen form (you can tape the newspapers to the inside of the jacket so they don't fall out). Add some purchased monster hands and a mask.

Devil: From the depths of the underworld comes one of the trendy characters that we all know and love... the devil . Get yourself a red body leotard (or red pants of some sort), and a long-sleeved red shirt. You can purchase a devil's tail or make your own by stuffing a red tube and adding a triangle shape to the end of it. Using thread tack it to the back of the pants. You'll need a headband with horns and a pitchfork as well. Finish this devil costume off with a red cape... and paint your face red too if desired! And for the ladies, wear a bright red dress instead of pants and a shirt.

Mad Scientist: Well, your Halloween monster had to come from somewhere, and it's usually the "mad scientist" who creates it, isn't it? All you'll need to put this costume together is a white lab coat spotted with "blood" (ketchup or food coloring or a tube of fake blood), and a bit of green goop (green food coloring). Pick up a pair of fake wire-rimmed glasses to wear. Place some pens in your pocket and add a child's stethoscope around your neck. To finish off your "creation" use some gel to spike your hair into wild disarray and you're ready to head out for a night on the town. Oh, you may also wish to add a fake "lab rat" peeking out of one of your pockets.

Witch: Always a popular choice for the ladies, you'll need a plain black dress, black pantyhose, black cape, a witches hat, and a broom. Simple, quick and easy.

Warlock: Gentlemen, if you are accompanying a lovely witch to a Halloween party, why not dress as her handsome counterpart? As a warlock, you will need a black turtleneck or long-sleeved stretch top, black pants, black cape, a witch or wizard's hat and a wand to carry.
