How To Make a Paper Fortune Teller

A paper fortune teller (also known as an origami fortune teller) was something I loved to make when I was in school, along with many of my friends. They were such fun to create, especially coming up with and writing the "fortunes" inside.

As it's been many, many years since I've created one of these things, I had totally forgotten how. So off to Youtube.com I went and watched quite a few videos before finally settling on the one you see featured here.

This is a teacher that is showing you how to put together a paper fortune teller in order for students to quiz themselves (and others) on their lessons (a wonderful idea to make learning fun). Although the reason behind her instructions has nothing to do with Halloween favors, her video was the clearest and gave the best step-by-step walk through. More importantly, it also gave additional instructions on how you write the fortunes inside of it and how to actually use this handy little item.

Having said that, I've included a few photos after the video to clarify the way in which you write the "fortunes" in an origami paper fortune so that it can be used as a Halloween party favor for the Fortune Teller Party theme, along with a bit more detailed instructions on how to manipulate it.

So there you have it. The folding isn't so hard and you can use a regular 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper. Of course, being as this is for Halloween, you may want to use a light to medium blue, purple or green colored paper... just don't use black as it's very hard to find a marker that will show up clearly when you write your fortunes. Okay, so here's how I did my own paper fortune teller.

On the four sections that you slip your fingers into I wrote four words: star, sun, gypsy, and moon, and included a little drawing of each for decoration. You could use stickers instead and use different words if you wish to do so. The picture to the right shows you a top down view of how it looks.

Now, lay your fortune predictor out flat so that the outside words are facedown on the table. You will see four triangles with a crease through the middle of each. This creates your eight fortunes. On each half of the triangles you'll add the numbers 1 through 8 as shown in the picture.

Once the numbers are added, lift up the flap for 1 and 2 and write a short fortune on each half of the triangle (suggestions for these are found below). Do this for the remaining numbers. Now your paper fortune teller is ready to use.

Slide your two thumbs and two index fingers back into the little pockets where the words star, sun, gypsy, and moon are located. Now keep your fingers closed so that only the four words are showing. The other person picks one of the words and you move your fingers back and forth to open and close the origami paper fortune saying each letter of the word. On the last letter, you keep the fortune opened to the numbers that are shown inside.

The person then picks a number and you count out the numbers as you move the fortune. So for example, let's say that the number three is chosen - you count: 1 (open the fortune so that the hidden numbers are shown), 2 (close and open again), 3 (close and open again).

The person once more picks a number and you lift up the triangle flap and read them the fortune that corresponds with the number that they've chosen.
