Selecting Your Halloween Costume Accessories

A costume seems to come to life when you add the finishing touches using a variety of Halloween costume accessories and makeup. An elf just isn't an elf without the pointed ears, Dracula needs his fangs, and Mickey certainly needs his ears!

Accessories help to complete the whole look of the outfit you've chosen to wear. Funky glasses, facial makeup and wigs can make an enormous difference in how your costume looks.

When choosing Halloween costume accessories, please take care that they are not too long, bulky or potentially dangerous (sharp points, etc.)

For children, it's best to use Halloween makeup (either purchased or homemade) rather than a full facial mask. Masks can make it hard to see and often are very hot, so they tend to be off more than on. If Halloween masks are worn, they should have nose and mouth openings and large eye holes. When buying Halloween makeup, be sure it reads non-toxic on the package.

Swords, knives, shields, and helmets can often be interchanged for various costume types. You could use these for knights, soldiers, roman gladiators, pirates, etc. Knives, swords and other such accessories should be made from cardboard or flexible materials such as plastic. It is especially important not to allow children to carry sharp objects.

Wings come in a variety of shapes, colors and materials. They can be delicate and flimsy, solid and colorful, or be feathered too. Wings are great for using on fairy outfits, bee, dragonfly and ladybug costumes, and for angels or bats.

Buying a costume kit is another great idea to help accessorize your outfit, which saves you from hunting down the individual pieces.
