Halloween Party Supply: What Basics Do You Require For Your Party?

Whatever your theme, you will need some Halloween party supply basics on hand to help set the mood and tie everything together.

First, your party supplies should be chosen according to the theme that you have selected (if there is one), plus you need to take into consideration who will be attending, such as whether it will be little ghosts and goblins or those larger gruesome ghouls that only come out late at night.

The time of day is also important. Late night parties usually include decorations and supplies that are typically grim and creepy, while a child's afternoon party will most often feature cute ghosts, smiling pumpkins, or familiar cartoon characters in Halloween settings.

To help you get started, I’ve put together the following list of Halloween party supply items that you might want to consider. You certainly do not need everything that’s written here, but it will give you a pretty good idea of what to look for as you gather items for your own eerie event.

Also keep in mind that some items won't be suitable for certain themes either. For example, if you're having a pumpkin themed party, you most likely wouldn't be putting up gobs of cobwebs or have Dracula peering out of his coffin in the corner as a prop.

Generally Used Halloween Party Supply Items

Invitations

Obviously, you'll need to send out invitations to your chosen guests. You can chose just general invitations with various Halloween related graphics printed on them, but if you're having a specific theme, then look for invites that reflect that theme so your guests will know what to expect and how to dress. If you'd like to make your own, check out our page on Halloween party invitations.

Paper Plates, Cups, Napkins & Utensils

Guests expect to be fed when attending a party. Basically, you will most likely be serving just finger foods, unless you're planning a dinner party. In either case, you will still need to buy dishes, cups, napkins and plastic utensils to hold food and drinks. You could use your own dishes, but that is a "make work" project. At the end of the night (or the next morning) you're going to want clean-up to be quick and easy. Once again, if you've planned your party around a certain theme, try to find items that match as closely as possible. If you can't locate matching items, then buy your paper products in a solid color to compliment your color scheme.

Table Covers

Some table coverings will be necessary to add ambience to your party and to protect your furnishings. Your kitchen/dining table will need a large cover and quite often you can find them to match your paper plates, etc. They usually come in plastic. You may wish to cover other tables with smaller coverings, mainly for mood setting. For example, if you're having an "old haunted house" party, throwing white sheets over tables, chairs and other furnishings will make it look like an abandoned haunted house. Good solid color choices are black, white, and orange.

Balloons

What's a party without balloons? These are one of the "must have" Halloween party supply basics to have on hand. For some reason, balloons seem to shout "PARTY!" Although you can easily pick up solid color balloons in whatever color selections you need, buying ones that have pre-printed designs can add pizzazz to your decor. And you don't need to stick with just the regular shaped balloons. You can find mylar balloons shaped like spiders, ghosts, skeletons, and other interesting Halloween creatures.

Crepe Paper Streamers

Orange and black crepe paper streamers twisted and tacked across the ceiling seem to be a "must do" for most Halloween parties. Still, if such a thing takes away from your theme, don't use them. These are great as a quick decoration at kid's parties, school events, or for decorations needed at a last-minute, throw-together teen/adult Halloween party.

Cobwebs

You can't seem to have 'creepy and scary' without walking into some cobwebs. After all, have you ever been in a 'dust-free, spider/cobweb free' haunted house? You can purchase the pull-apart bags of cobwebs that are easy to use and go a long, long way. The trick with this stuff is to hook some of it over an item, then stretch it really thin by carefully pulling the threads apart and hooking it over other objects. Very cool stuff! Your other option is to buy the spray can which shoots out streams of a chemical cobweb mixture. It's a little messier and certainly not as realistic looking, but it is quick and simple to use.

Candles and Candleholders

Please don't use candles at a child's party. This is one Halloween party supply that needs to be watched carefully - and a children's party is not the place. However, for real spookiness, these are a "must have" for any adult party. Black candles and iron-style candle holders are a perfect choice. You can also use orange candles or pre-shaped candles. Although black tapers in a creepy looking candelabrum are perfect for the food table, I'd suggest pillar candles or long-burning votives in glass holders for around the main room. And be sure to keep an eye on them for good measure. Don't light candles in any part of the house that you can't monitor consistently.

Black Lights

You can purchase small black light bulbs to replace the regular lightbulbs in your lamps. You could also set up a spot light black light bulb to create an eerie effect in one area of the house or outside the front door.

Halloween Music and Spooky Sounds

A Halloween party supply item that is always required at any party is music and creepy sounds. The sound effects are perfect for the front entrance as guests arrive, and of course, good music is needed to keep the party moving! Fog Machines

Although this is not a "necessary" item, it is a favorite among Halloween enthusiasts. Fog machines add to the overall atmosphere of your party as it drifts across your outdoor graveyard or walkway.

(Note: please don't use these in the house as the fluid used to make the fog can aggravate those guests that may have asthma or other breathing-related problems).

Finally, although the above list gives you a pretty good idea on what Halloween party supply items you could use, it's not necessisary to get them all. There's also a few other items that you may want such as dry ice for the "bubbling cauldron", prizes and favors for games, and of course, suitable props to enhance your theme party.
