Paranoid Pumpkin Halloween Party

Planning a Halloween party is much like planning any other type of party. You need to decide on a theme, who the guests will be, choose the invitations, decorate the house, and plan a few party games in advance with prizes.

For the Paranoid Pumpkin Party theme, everything is centered around pumpkins and the color orange - orange streamers, carved pumpkins, orange or shaped novelty candles, pumpkin style invitations, etc. Below you will find a few ideas to help you get started on planning this particular theme party.

Halloween Pumpkin Party Invitations

You may purchase invitations at a store to suit this theme. Below is a sample halloween invitation that you could also use. Use a orange felt-tipped marker to write your information on the invitation in keeping with the orange theme. You will also need to get:

  • Envelopes and stamps
  • Pumpkin stickers (or you can color small pumpkins directly on the envelope).

  • Newspapers for work area

The Rotting Pumpkin

Materials Needed:

  • 1 carved pumpkin
  • Gummy worms/bugs
  • Black and green paint or food coloring
  • Small paint brush or toothbrush

Instructions:

1. Carve out the pumpkin in desired face pattern.

2. Dip the paintbrush or toothbrush in some black paint or food coloring. Splatter it along the pumpkin, both inside and out. (To splatter, hold the brush near the pumpkin and run your finger down the brush edges, causing them to pop up and spray the paint). Do the same with the green paint. You want to make the pumpkin look like it's moldy and rotting.

3. Let the paint dry. Place the gummy worms around and inside the pumpkin. Make sure some are "crawling" out around the openings.

Mini Egg-Carton Pumpkins

Materials Needed:

  • Egg Carton
  • Green Pipe Cleaners
  • Orange Paint
  • Black Marker

Instructions:

1. Cut the cups apart on the carton.

2. Glue two cups together to form one pumpkin.

3. Paint the pumpkin orange. Glue a piece of pipe cleaner on top for a vine.

4. Color in a pumpkin face on one side with the marker.

5. Place these small pumpkins on tables around the room or create a mobile of hanging pumpkins. This is a great activity to do with your children.

Special Guest: The Headless Horseman

Materials Needed:

  • Old clothes: black pants, shirt, gloves
  • Dark cape or blanket & boots
  • Small black scarf or material
  • Lots of newspapers
  • Small amount of fiberfill stuffing
  • Real or plastic pumpkin

  • Flashlight or LED Flasher Bike Light

Instructions:

1. Stuff shirt and pants and attach together with safety pins. (Make sure the pins don't show on the outside. Attach cape around shoulders.

2. Sit the horseman in a corner of the room. (A good place is a dark corner or the end of a hallway).

3. Place the boots under the legs, arranging pant legs over the top of boots. Stuff gloves with fiberfill stuffing and secure to shirt.

4. Arrange the scarf or black material inside the neck edge of the shirt to cover the newspaper and look like the head was cut off.

5. Set the Jack-o-Lantern down on the lap of the body. Maker sure it sits snuggly. You don't want it rolling off if someone accidentally bumps into your headless horseman.

6. Place a flashlight inside OR buy one of those LED flasher lights used on bicycles that run on batteries.

"Grow" Your Own Pumpkin Patch

Materials:

  • Several pumpkins in different sizes
  • Some twine (for vines)
  • Some dead leaves and twigs
  • Green material or "fake grass"
  • Wire/plastic fencing used for gardens

Instructions:

1. Decide where you want your pumpkin patch. A corner of a room or the end of a hallway work well.

2. Lay down your "grass". Scatter dead leaves and twigs over the surface.

3. Place your pumpkins within your Pumpkin Patch. Cut some of the twine and tie them to a few of the pumpkins to make "vines".

4. Set up the fence around your pumpkin patch.

NOTE: Some additional ideas might be to make one or two ghosts to "haunt" your pumpkin patch. You could also create a small sign to stick on the wall stating who's pumpkin patch this is).

General Decorating Ideas

  • Cover your food table with an orange cloth. Scatter some dead leaves and twigs on it. Place some hollowed out gourds or oranges on the table with either candles inside or fill with chip dip.

  • Use orange light bulbs in your lamps.

  • Print color pumpkin graphics and enlarge them. Tape them to the walls for decoration.

  • Use lots of orange candles and decorative pumpkin candles that you can buy.

  • Decorate the ceiling with orange crepe paper streamers and orange balloons.

Games and Activities

Games and activities are always fun to play at parties. They keep the guests entertained and the party flowing. Nothing is worse than having 20 guests sitting around staring at each other with nothing to say or do. So when planning out your party, be sure to include several games for the evening.

Space them out accordingly. You should have one or two icebreaker games so guests get to know one another, a couple of games people can play individually, a couple of games for teams and one or more group games.

Get a feel for what your guests seem to like. If they seem to enjoy group games more than individual ones, include more of these. Of course, you won't know this until the night of the party, so be sure you have several of each lined up. It doesn't mean you have to play them all, but at least you'll have a variety to choose from.

Pumpkin Pop-up (Group Activity)

Materials Needed:

  • An Orange balloon with a pumpkin face drawn on it

  • Instructions:

The object of the game is that the group must keep the balloon in the air at all times using only their heads. They can not use any hands, feet, shoulders, etc. It's a silly activity, but creates lots of laughs. Even our dog likes to get in on this game!

    Pumpkin Ring Toss (Individual Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • A medium sized pumpkin
    • 3 rings which are at least 3" larger than the pumpkin
(Make rings out of bendable wire, coat hangers, etc.)

    Instructions:

Mark a spot on the floor with masking tape. This is where your guests will stand.

Place the pumpkin 5 to 8 feet away.

Guests line up and take turns throwing the 3 rings, trying to ring the pumpkin.

You can reward guests in two ways. If a guest gets 2 rings on the pumpkin, they receive a small price. If they get 3 rings on the pumpkin, they get a slightly larger prize. You could also give each guest 9 tries (3 rings, 3 times). The one who rings the pumpkin the most out of the 9 tosses gets a prize.

    Pumpkin Pursuit (Individual Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • 5 pieces of 8 ½" x 11" orange paper, cut into 4 pieces
    • scissors
    • Black Marker

    Instructions:

    1. Use the pumpkin templates below to cut out a pumpkin from each quarter piece of paper. You can choose from the black and white sketch and color the pumpkin in yourself or print out the color pumpkin to use instead.

    2. On the back of these pumpkins you are going to write the following:

Write the number 1 on 10 of the pumpkins
Write the number 5 on 5 of the pumpkins
Write the number 10 on 5 of the pumpkins

    3. Hide the pumpkins throughout the party area. When guests arrive, tell them they must find as many pumpkins as they can in a specified time limit.

    4. When the time is up, have the guests add up the numbers on the back of the pumpkins. The person with the most points wins.

    Pumpkin Bowling (Individual Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • 1 or 2 small round pumpkins OR you can use those orange hockey balls
    • 1 set of children's plastic bowling pins OR 10 plastic pop bottles

    Instructions:

Set up the bowling pins at one end of the room (use a room with flooring, not carpet). Mark a spot on the floor about 20 feet away with masking tape. This is your "foul" line.

Each player takes turns rolling a pumpkin or ball at the pins. Give each person 3 tries. The person who has knocked over the most pins wins.

    Pumpkins Don't Smile (Group Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    None

    Instructions:

One person is selected to stand in the middle of the room. Everyone else sits around facing him/her. This person's objective is to NOT smile while the remaining guests ask questions. The trick though, is that the person sitting in the middle can only answer the questions by saying pumpkin. If the person smiles or laughs, they are out and the player who made the person in the middle smile takes their place in the middle of the ring. The winner is the person who lasts the longest.

    Pass the Orange (Team Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • 2 oranges

    Instructions:

Divide the players into 2 equal teams. Have them line up in a row. Give an orange to the first person in each row. They must place it under their chin, next to their neck. The object is to pass the orange from chin to chin to the next player all the way down the line. The first team to get the orange to the end wins. However, if a player drops an orange, they must pick it up with their chin before passing it on…no hands allowed!

    How Many Pumpkins? (Individual Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • Medium size glass jar
    • 1-2 packages candies or gum
    • Small decorated box (ballot box)
    • Several pens/pencils
    • Small slips of paper cut up evenly

    Instructions:

    1. Fill the glass jar with the bubble gum or candies. Be sure to count the exact number of candies that you put into the jar.

    2. Cut a rectangular hole in the center of the box.

    3. Place the jar, box, paper and pencils on an easily accessible table.

    4. Have guests write their names on a piece of paper and then write their guess on how many pieces of gum or candy are in the jar. Put the paper in the ballot box. Only one guess per person (or you'll be all night checking the ballots).

    5. At a pre-designated time, empty the box and see who has guessed the closest. The winner gets the jar of candy/gum.

(NOTE: Another guessing game to use: Put a large pumpkin on a table. Guests have to figure out how much it weighs.)

Don't Say Pumpkin (Ice Breaker Activity)

    Materials:

    • Several clothespins
    • Orange Paint
    • Paint brush

    Instructions:

Paint the clothespins orange. As guests arrive, give each a clothespin, which they pin onto their clothes in a visible area. Instruct the guests that anytime someone catches someone else saying the word Pumpkin, they can take that person's clothespin and attach it to their clothing.

Play this game for about 15 minutes to ½ hour after everyone has arrived (to give the latecomers a chance to participate). After the time is up, the person with the most clothespins wins a prize.

Pumpkin Piñata (Game and Decoration) (Individual Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • 1 Large Balloon
    • Orange paint
    • Black Marker
    • Yellow Paint
    • Newspapers for Shredding
    • Paint Brush
    • Heavy string or rope
    • Flour and Water to make paste
    • Broomstick
    • Bowl

    Instructions:

    1. It might be a good idea to spread out some newspapers over your work area. Mix water and flour together to form a thick gooey paste. Shred the newspapers into approximately 2" x 5" strips.

    2. Dunk the newspapers in the flour mixture, coating well. Cover the balloon with a layer of newspaper strips, leaving a small opening around the neck of the balloon. Let dry 2 to 3 hours. Repeat until you have 3 to 4 layers on the balloon. Let dry 24 hours.

    3. Paint the paper mache pumpkin orange. Let dry. With the opening is facing up, pop the balloon and remove it.

    4. Draw a pumpkin face on the balloon and add the "ridges" with a black marker. Fill in the eyes, nose and mouth with yellow paint. 5. Poke 2 holes on the top edge of the pumpkin near the opening, opposite each other. Pull the ends of the rope through and secure to make a handle.

    6. Fill with candy and suspend in an area that has lots of room. Remove any breakable objects from the area.

    7. Guests take turns being blindfolded. Turn them around 3 times and end facing the piñata. Hand them the broomstick and allow them 3 whacks to try to break the piñata. Continue in turns until the piñata breaks. Everyone then runs to pick up the candy off the floor.

(NOTE: In the case of small children, only use 2 to 3 layers of paper mache. Keep extra candy on hand for those children who don't pick up much candy.)

    Pumpkin Trivia Game (Group Activity)

    Materials Needed:

    • A sheet of paper for each guest and a pencil
    • Your question sheet

    Instructions:

    1. Have each guest write the numbers 1 to 10 in a list on their sheets of paper.

    2. Begin asking the trivia questions. The guests write their answers on their paper next to the question number. When finished, read off the correct answers. The person with the most correct answers wins. (You may want to have guests pass their sheets to the right or left for marking by another person).
