Halloween Activities - Pumpkin Patch Pumpkins

Pumpkins - a decorative accent to any garden - especially during the Autumn season. Even the names of the varieties tend to set the mood for the treasures that lie beneath those bright yellow blossoms and those huge green leaves. Everything from Spookies (6-7 inch globes) to Big Max (can reach more than 100 lbs.).



When you go to the Pumpkin Patch to pick out your selection-the perfect Jack-O-Lantern for home and hearth, remember these pointers:

If you can cut your own from a vine, use pruning shears, leaving about 3 inches of stem on the fruit. Pumpkins can decay quickly, if the stems are broken. Set your pumpkins in the sun for a week or two to harden the outer skin, then store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

Pumpkins can be used as decorative touches in planning any outdoor displays for Fall and Halloween. Set a display of assorted pumpkins in an old wheelbarrow, or child's play wagon. Place around tied cornstalks or on sets of hay. Use as seasonal punch bowls for cider, or apple lemonade and as a serving bowl for soups, stews, chili, etc.

Use smaller pumpkins for individual serving dishes and even smaller ones as place cards for a meal.

Pumpkins can be scooped out and votive candles inserted for a striking effect, and even flower and foliage choices can be placed when florist styrofoam is inserted in the pumpkin base. Use clear white tiny lights and intertwine between pumpkins and gourds on mantels, dining room sideboards, buffets, table tops, etc.

Pumpkins only come once a year - let's make the most of the joy they bring and the beauty they provide for our homes and our families. ENJOY!
