Ditch the Candy this Halloween

So you’re looking at the Halloween candy selection in the stores and sighing. It’s the same old fun-sized bars you’ve been giving out to trick-or-treaters for years. Not to mention the prices have gone through the roof. Eight bucks buys a bag that won’t last twenty minutes. This year, try something more unique, more fun and cheap!

Rather than stocking up on goodies from the candy isle, head to the party store or craft shop. There you can find bags full of inexpensive Halloween toys such as stickers, pencils, plastic rings, and more. Fill your plastic pumpkin or cauldron with these toys for the kids to pick from, or fill up small Halloween bags to give out, making the toys a surprise.

For treats, bake a batch of small cookies and brownies, then separate them into small baggies tied with a twist tie or black and orange string. To be on the safe side, give out these treats only to children that you know. Giving out food made personally such as baked goods to children you aren’t familiar with can make parents nervous.

If you want to make additional snacks, make a pot of popcorn or caramel popcorn and fill up small baggies. Caramel and candy apples also make great special gifts for the children in the neighborhood you’re especially close to. Don’t forget that parents tend to love these treats, too.

Making these assortments of surprises not only gives you some fun activities for Halloween, but the kids will love the variety it gives them. Halloween toys and special goodies are more personal than the usual candy bars that will already be stuffing their treat bags. This special touch will make Halloween night more fun and create memories for both kids and parents to take with them for years to come.
